For me ICQ was my very first step in instant messaging. I have been using it for 13 years now I and plan of quit using it because it’s a proprietary, non open protocol. It lacks progress. At least I cannot tell if there has been added any features since using it. Plus I don’t know where my messages are being transported and who can monitor or even manipulate them.
I go XMPP (Jabber), which is open and it has been standardized by the IETF . It has so many more features than ICQ, MSN and Yahoo. You can Audio/Video Chat. There are chat groups and you can run your own server. It is able to interact with modern telephony installations. You can use it on any device:
- Mobile Phone
- Tablet PC
- Desktop Computer
- Laptop Computer
- even your Settop Box
Even big players like whatsapp or facebook are using xmpp, but they choose to lock everyone else out, meaning: Normal Jabber-Accounts cannot talk directly to facebook users or whatsapp users which is honestly a shame.
I want freedom, I want control and I want features and progress. This is why I’m telling you this because I want you all also to quit using those proprietary chat-services and start using XMPP.
Either setup your own jabber server or form groups where you define a person of trust as the administrator. The alternative is to get a free account with one of countless free operators. My favourite XMPP Client it Jitsi btw. Audio and video works flawlessly and it runs on Windows, OS X and Linux. It’s really fun.
